A classic, stout, generous, powerful, simple, stable forgiving paragon of workboat development, the American catboat is probably best known as a shallow draft, centerboard vessel with a beam half as great as its waterline length.  Its rig is a distinctive large single gaff sail set on a strong mast well up in the bows supported by a single forestay with an equally distinctive big, barn-door rudder, as much as one sixth of the boat’s overall length.

Despite their workboat origins - they have been the daysailer's of choice among Kings, Presidents and sailors of all backgrounds and vintages for generations.  Ask any seasoned boater which one among the sometimes dozens of boats they have owned was their favorite and the overwhelming majority will point to the smallest, most modest and often the most beautiful boats they have owned.
